What is the IBEW / NJATC Aptitude Test
The IBEW aptitude test (also called the NJATC or EITC test) is the standardized entrance exam for IBEW electrical apprenticeships across the United States. Scoring explained
The IBEW / Electrical Training Alliance aptitude test is scored on a 1–9 (stanine) scale. You need a score of 4 or higher to be considered qualified. Everyone who qualifies is then invited to an interview, and your interview score determines your rank on the apprenticeship selection list.
There is no separate pass/fail per section — algebra & functions and reading comprehension are combined into a single composite score. The test is competitive, and many applicants don't reach the qualifying score on their first attempt — which is exactly why timed practice matters.
Your local JATC notifies you of your result, typically by mail or email; timing varies by local. Retest rules are set by your local JATC: many enforce a six-month waiting period, while some locals allow reapplication sooner (e.g., after three months). Check your local's notice.
How to prepare
Most applicants who fail didn't review algebra before test day. The gap between passing and topping the list is almost entirely practice volume.
